A good starting point when building a relationship with Christ is not to get caught up in what you are doing wrong but instead seek to develop a strong relationship with Christ. As you get closer, the HOLY SPIRIT will point out the areas in your life that need to be cleaned up. If you are a new believer, here are a few starting points as you begin your relationship with Christ. Keep in mind that it is a Relationship and as you speak to your friends, you speak to God and tell him your concerns and God will speak to you with the word along with people that he will send to your life.
-
Ask God for help and be real about where you are and how you feel about this new relationship and the changes you are afraid of making
-
Ask God (Holy Spirit) to show you what you need to do (Exodus 33:13)
-
Ask God to help you identify the areas in your life that do not line up with Christ (II Timothy 2:22)
-
Read the word and attend bible studies, church, and other areas where the word of God will be spoken. The word speaks directly to you.(Hebrews 4:12)
-
Examine the outside influences, such as tv shows and music that you feed yourself. What you feeding yourself? Where do you spend your time? Ask God to help you resist temptation. (Psalm 51; I Corinthians 11:28)
-
Seek him daily. Do not allow yourself to not spend time with God if you do not have time to devote a full hour, start small and then increase your time to where it becomes a necessity. Even if you speak to him for a minute with a clean heart than try to boast about you prayed for 3 hours. God desires a heart like David and Daniel (Isaiah 55:6; Ephesians 6:10-13)
-
Seek a relationship, not religion. Think about your close relationships that you have with your friends and family. How did you become close with those people? Building a relationship with Christ is similar. Spending time with him will help you get to know him better and know what he desires for your life. (Psalm 37:4)
